Lucy is a guided meditation creator, energy alignment guide, and the founder of Purely Being, based in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada. Her purpose here is to guide others into the infinite truth of who we truly are — love. She believes in the beauty of the human spirit and our infinite power and potential to create miracles in our everyday lives. Her creative medium is a meditation where she holds space for others to live, breathe, and move as their most powerful selves here and now.

How do you feel during the lockdown and how do you cope with it?

I feel very fortunate that I work from home and love being an introvert! Because of that, 2020 was still a lovely year for me. I was surrounded by my family, growing my business, and spending lots of time in nature. I live in an agricultural area with many orchards, which allows me to step out of my door and instantly be surrounded by trees and peace. Spending time in nature plays a BIG part in my well-being, no matter what’s going on!

As a highly sensitive person, I can feel the collective energy. My emotions have felt more intense and wavy (up and down) this year. What helped me most was simply witnessing what I was feeling without judging it as right or wrong, just letting it be and know the emotional waves will pass, just like the weather.

What inspired you to start to meditate?

As part of my mom’s healing journey recovering from cancer, she began to practice meditation. It was normal to see her meditating thirty minutes in the morning and evening every day growing up and I didn’t think too much about it!

Years later, in my final year of high school, my best friend saw her meditating and asked her to teach us how. This moment was truly a gift to me. After learning from my mom I began to meditate as a way to reduce stress and anxiety, especially during university. I had no idea it would lead me to where I am today and I’m so grateful to have my mom as a guide and mentor.

What inspires you to create a meditation podcast to share your skills with others around the globe?

It was a bit of a happy accident! When I went through my spiritual awakening and dark night of the soul in my early 20’s, I began to feel a strong desire to ease suffering in the world but I wasn’t sure how to go about it. I became a devout spiritual seeker, meditating every day, and reading every spiritual book I could get my hands on.

A few years later, I completed my 200hr yoga teacher training in Hawaii. My fellow yogis all said I should make guided meditations because they liked how relaxed they felt as they heard my voice hehe.

One thing led to another and before I knew it, I had a blog sharing new mediations each week! I now have over 150 mediations and I’m still in love with creating new ones every week.

What did you want to do for a living before becoming a meditation practitioner?

Most of the people in my family are in the health and medical fields and because of that my original plan was to be a paediatrician. When I started on this path, I began to feel so lost and purposeless. One of the many gifts meditation gives is a deeper understanding of Self. It helped me become aware of how little I enjoyed my pre-med classes while I had a passion for health, it was from a more holistic perspective.

I began to explore the mind-body connection in my free time while at university and discovered the power of mindset to create vibrant health! I realised that if a person can connect to their core and find inner harmony, the body naturally heals itself as it was designed to do so.

I still desire to help people with their health but from an energetic and emotional level. When we relax and focus on things that bring us joy, healthy living is simply a by-product. Everything goes hand in hand. Physical, mental, and spiritual health are so deeply integrated — they’re inseparable.

Are you a tea drinker? Are you interested in the tea ritual?

Yes, I love tea! I have a drawer filled with all different kinds at home. I recently took a hiatus from coffee and tea has become even more integral in my life. And yes, I am! To me, drinking tea is a sacred act, and the perfect time to practice mindfulness. I have a meditation for mindfully drinking tea that you can find on my website if you’re interested :)

What is your favourite tea?

Right now I mostly drink various kinds of herbal tea, especially ginger tea and nettle tea. Nettle is wonderful for the kidneys, and ginger helps with my digestion. As a coffee substitute, I have been using roasted dandelion tea with oat milk — it’s delicious!

Are you always a serene person?

No, quite the opposite. I think I only found serenity because I was so anxious and needed a way out! It was through my struggle to find peace and happiness that I became interested in spirituality and meditation.

By practising meditation and mindfulness, spending less time “in the world/online” and more time in nature, I’ve found a much deeper sense of peace. My mind can still move quite fast but now I have the practices to calm it. I think we all underestimate how healing and refreshing even a single deep breath can be in terms of reconnecting to peace.

What is your daily ritual?

I like to wake up without an alarm clock, trusting my body to let me know when it’s ready (usually 7 am). The first thing I do is to step outside with my puppy Molly. She runs around while I breathe in the fresh air and say hello to a new day. Then I make a warm herbal tea and sit to meditate anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the day. Next, I like to listen to an inspirational talk on YouTube, write in my journal (sometimes I channel messages from my higher Self, other times I make lists of things I love and appreciate). Then it’s breakfast time! For me, this is usually a piece of fruit then a smoothie or oatmeal, and time to start creating.

I like to follow my inspiration when it comes to working. I have a loose schedule of tasks for each day, and yet, if I feel SUPER passionate about something, I prioritise that and finish the rest later. I think the energy of excitement is too powerful to put off and it’s often what inspires my best work.

In the afternoons, I go outside, either walking or riding my bike, do errands, laundry, and then start on dinner.

My evening routine is either yoga or a funny movie, followed by tea, prayer/meditation and sleep! I go to bed VERY early (like 8:30 pm) and my friends love to tease me about it.

Do you have a non-compromised self-care time every day?

The truth is, my whole day is self-care! Including my work! Creating is what gives me energy and purpose.

In general, if something is draining to me, I don’t do it. If it’s something I need to do, I spend time in meditation reframing it in my mind so I can do it from a place of love and clarity.

For me, self-care isn’t so much a ritual or specific practice, it’s a state of mind. Self-care means being an active and loving advocate for myself and my wellbeing.

It’s an act of choosing to be my own caretaker, lover, best friend, nurturer, and motivational coach. Sometimes it looks like a bubble bath or yoga practice, other times it looks like telling myself to get off the couch and respond to emails I’ve been putting off!

Tell me about what inspirational project you are working on now?

Right now I am working on the 2.0 launch of my manifestation course, “Envision: The True You”. It’s a 3-part course devoted to helping you discover a clear picture of your Highest Self and your core dreams and desires in life. And then offering you the opportunity to practice LIVING as that True Self every single day. I’m super excited as it will launch in the spring! You can visit my website and subscribe to my newsletter to stay updated.

What does serenity mean to you?

To me, serenity is a feeling of wholeness, harmony, and oneness with all that is.

I believe serenity is a direct experience of life as it truly is. All of life and creation is in a state of serene being even though it is constantly moving and expanding.

In practice, serenity means taking the time to slow down, breathe, and tune into the inner stillness all around me and within me. When I do this I become a part of the serene essence of life and it feels like home.

Please share three serene life advice.

Here are my three tips for experiencing serenity in daily life:

  1. Remember: Serenity is everywhere. If you pause for a moment, you can see it in the clouds, the trees, the still earth, the small flowers. It is far more prevalent than chaos and we need only tune into its immense vastness to see this.
  2. Focus on the serenity where it already is. Tune into something specific that is still and serene in your immediate environment. Softly focus your gaze and attention upon it. For example, if you are indoors you may focus upon a wall or desk. If you are outdoors you may focus on a tree or the earth below you.
  3. Breathe deeply and allow yourself to tune to the sensation of serenity as you focus upon this serene aspect in your environment. After you have found the feeling, close your eyes and feel it within yourself. Carry this feeling with you throughout the day and repeat the process as necessary.

I have created a specific mediation on serenity for House of Serene which you can listen to on my podcast, it’s called “Daily Living Meditation: Serenity”.
